United States Kudos

It is no secret that I’m a fan of the marimba since I’ve written a lot of music including solo pieces, chamber music and a concerto. I love the fact that the marimba can stand on its own as a solo instrument but has a quirky quality and is not as homogeneous top to bottom as the piano. Because my music focuses on contrapuntal conversations between distinct characters, it takes advantage of the fact that there are three distinct registers each full of character to support strands of polyphony. When I think of the marimba I think of Marimba One because it has an ideal characterizations of these three registers. The bass fundamental is strong so that the harmony is clear but it has enough spice from the audible upper partials to be complex and exotic, almost electronic. The midrange is like butter – anything you write sounds good there(!), and the upper register has a bright ping that cuts.

What might be overlooked is how my love for the marimba has influenced my orchestration in works that are not explicitly about the marimba. The marimba offers warm but definite attacks like the harp but the marimba has a greater dynamic range and fresher timbre than the harp, not to mention that it is chromatic without fussing with pedals. It is also the only member of the percussion family that can play in the low register with agility. Before the five-octave marimba became common I would struggle with the timpani to provide that low percussive voice

Steve Mackey - Composer, Musician

When I first took possession of my first recording studio last year, I was inspired with the goal of having something I've always wanted… a really nice tuned percussion section that would provide the heart and soul of my permanent 'in house' collection. I began finding vintage instruments from around the country, marimbas, xylophones, vibes, of as many varieties as I could, but I always knew i needed the center of the collection to be one exceptional extended range marimba.

All roads led to Ron Samuels and Marimba One. We talked about what my needs and expectations were and he went and built me an instrument that exceeded all my expectations. It's a thing of beauty, both sonically and visually. I've already used it in my latest score. It plays and records wonderfully. Thank you Marimba One.

Danny Elfman - Composer

Marimba One has one of the longest ring lengths and exceptional bar quality of any marimba manufacturer. The instrument is a terrific mix of playability, portability, and visual appeal. No other marimba retains its sound quality or beauty like the Marimba One. The quality and the ability of the Marimba One to sound outstanding over time is unmatched. I haven't found an instrument that works so well in so many situations. Best wishes.

Colorado State University

Hi Ron, Just a quick note to let you know the new marimba arrived at the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra last week. I'm especially impressed (but not surprised) with the tone consistency throughout the keyboard, the high quality of the lower range, and the superior attention to every little detail. It will serve the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra extremely well. Thank you so much!

Michael Israelievitch - Principal Timpanist / Percussionist - The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra

Hi Ron,

I love Marimba One marimbas, which is why I purchased a PASIC floor model for my personal use in 2004.  Then in 2005-6 while teaching at Webb City High School, I facilitated the order of another Marimba One for the school district.  I left Webb City in 2007 to begin work toward a DMA at The Ohio State University and am now Assistant Professor of Percussion at Louisiana Tech University.  I actually sold my personal Marimba One in 2007 so that I could afford to go back to grad school.  I hope to eventually partner with you again, as I love the instrument. Thanks,

Greg

Hi Ron and Co.

I just wanted to tell you how thrilled I am with my new marimba!  Even unpacking and assembling it was a testimony to the care and precision with which it was made.

And, of course, playing it makes me very glad I went the extra distance to purchase one of your instruments! Wow.

Wishing you continued success in the new year - thanks again!!

Artie Storch

Hi Denise,

I will definitely have my daughter send you some pics when things settle down...she is so excited that she left for school today without her backpack!  It is beautiful.

What an exciting evening.  I had the box decorated with bows and my significant other set up the disco ball in the garage after I left to get her.  They assembled it without a problem.  She said the marimba was better than a new car.  I knew she would see it that way.

Thank you so much for being such critical part of this 'once in a lifetime' event and it couldn't have arrived at a better time.

Please tell  Ron Samuels I said thank you.  It is absolutely gorgeous.  The packing was phenomenal, delivery went off without a hitch, the driver was very friendly and courteous, and you have made one very special 16 year old happier than ever.

Now I am going to sit back and enjoy the music-Kris

Marimba One Experience
Alvin Lane Jr. is a percussion major at the University of Kentucky. As he began to specialize in the Marimba, he desired very much to purchase one. He considered a purchase of such a significant instrument a once is a lifetime purchase. As he studied and conducted research on Marimba options, he was very convinced that a custom made Marimba from Marimba One was his choice. He could not be persuaded to consider a used instrument or a Yamaha. Yamaha was the manufacturer of choice for the University of Kentucky.
Such a considerable purchase was not considered in reach.

I suggested that he consider applying for scholarships. He applied for a number of scholarships. He also competed for an instrument scholarship with Yamaha. He was turned down for each scholarship that he applied for. He also was not the finalist for the Yamaha scholarship.

But a number of wonderful things happened as he did everything he could do.
1. The percussion department at UK observed Alvin’s diligence and his improvement and offered him a scholarship for his Junior and Senior year.
2. His performance tape for Yamaha was shared with Marimba One and they offered him a discount on a marimba.

As a result the decision was made to proceed with the purchase. Alvin selected the Marimba that met his need for height adjustment and quality of sound.  As he discussed his preferences, the head of the percussion department indicated that he also considered Marimba One instruments as a premier instrument. The reason they had Yamaha was because of the discounts over the years.
Once the instrument was constructed and delivered, Alvin was delighted.  It has been a tremendous resource for additional practice time and improvement in the quality of his performances. He is very pleased with his purchase.
He had the opportunity in the summer of 2010 to participate in the Zeltsman Music Festival and Program.

Alvin Lane

My new 5 octave Marimba One just arrived. Not only does it sound wonderful, it also has a beautiful design. It is by far the highest quality marimba I have ever experienced. Thank you all so much for building me such a beautiful instrument!

I received my marimba last Wednesday and have been playing it ever since.  It sounds beautiful and I could not be happier with it.

Thanks Ron,

I LOVE the marimba.  I got hooked on Marimba One marimbas when I was in college at WTAMU so I started saving.  10 years later and with the help of my wife I finally had enough to buy one!  Now I can practice great solo literature again at home to play for my students and other events.

Jon Seale

Jon Seale

I also just wanted to add, especially after just playing my recital last night, that I absolutely LOVE my marimba.  In all of my years as a percussionist (which I guess is up to about 12 now... yikes!), I still have not heard one that sounds better day in and day out.  Thank you SO much!

David Saad, Austin Texas

David Saad

Many thanks to you and your artisans who built our lovely instrument!   The instrument has served to inspire our students to practice more and it is allowing us to broaden the solo, duet, and ensemble repertoire.  I now quite frequently catch a couple of our students, in particular, working on duets.

Diane Bargiel - Adirondack Community College, New York

The marimba arrived yesterday!  It is beautiful in all respects.  I am very impressed with the evenness in sound across the instrument as well as the "improved" bass sound.  We are very pleased!  Thanks so much.

Tomm Roland - University of Nebraska, Omaha

Hi Ron,

Thank you so much for your time and dedication and continuing to deliver high quality instruments!  I get along with my new marimba very well since it arrived last month!  I will perform in an event tomorrow and I can't wait to share beautiful "Marimba One" music with others :DSincerely,

-Andrew Lin

Ron,

The new marimba is just terrific!  What a beautiful consistent dark sound throughout the keyboard.  The craftsmanship is also world class.  Please thank all involved for their excellent work.  I know that I will enjoy the instrument for years to come.

We received the marimba a couple weeks ago and assembled it. It was packed beautifully and went together like a dream! The initial impact of the sound was glorious - after years of the same 40 year old 4.0 octave marimba being the only marimba in our program, you can imagine the elation of me and my students to play on a Marimba One.

Hey!

I got my marimba today! It is perfect and sounds great! Thank you so much for everything. I appreciate it.

Heather

I just got my first set of Wave Wrap mallets.  They're simply amazing- I can't hear any contact sound!  I love them!

Brandon J. Kelly

I know Eric Hollenbeck, Professor at Colorado State University, and played his 5.0 octave 'Marimba One' instrument and fell in love with it!  It's now my standard for 'the best' marimbas.  It out performed all other marimbas I've played, and I've played many.

Teag Solberg

You and your company truly make outstanding instruments!  We received our 5.0 octave marimba just before the school district went on winter break and it was truly an early Christmas!  The students were completely ecstatic and everyone who hears this instrument find its sound unbelievable.  The first time we used the Marimba One with our percussion ensemble it almost made me upset at how much better it sounded than everything else!  I thought our other instruments were good too!

David Gronneberg, Grain Valley High School

I could not have asked for a better instrument!  It is an absolute privilege to play on a marimba with such quality in the sound, feel and craftsmanship.  Thank you to Ron and the team at Marimba One for building this for me!  It's a dream!

Nick Bruno

We are extremely pleased with the instrument in all regards especially in the bass register.

Robert E. Baden - West Virginia Wesleyan College

Thank you Ron!!!!!!

We are so happy with our beautiful instrument. YOU are the best builder of marimbas in the world today as far as I'm concerned. Today was the first day out of the studio for it and though we have many other marimbas at KSU, all of my students chose to perform solos on our new beauty! Thank you once again for the awesome work that you all do at Marimba One. We feel so lucky to have "scored" one finally.

John Lawless - Kennesaw State University

WOW!! Thank you so much for this amazing piece of art! I can't believe the way this instrument sounds and looks! I am very happy with my decision on Marimba One and I will be recommending your company to anyone that asks.

Thank you all again so much for your amazing service and work!

Percussively,

John Jones

Thanks again for the wonderful instruments that you are building for us.  We are extremely ecstatic with the addition of our fourth 5 octave marimba for our high school Cedar Ridge.  We are hoping to obtain a 4 1/3 in the near future as well.  I also received the box of mallets and am so so grateful.  They are going to be of great use for our performances and auditions and now we have samples for testing for the percussionist know what to purchase... Super quality stuff!!!!!   We are so excited for our future endeavours with all of the great things that are happening with the program.  Once again, Thanks for all of your considerations for my programs throughout.  Take care and God bless

Rick Rodriguez, Cedar Ridge Percussion Ensemble

The trip to London and audition for the Royal College of Music went very well, but I will not hear the results until December.   I performed on one of your insturments and loved it!!! The tone quality and resonance throughout the entire keyboard was flawless.  I had played on a Yamaha a few times prior to travelling to London and there is no comparison.

Judi Spencer

Hey Ron,

I just wanted to shoot you a quick email to say thanks for the marimba!  The instruments is beautiful, and the sound quality is unparalleled.  You exceeded every expectation I had - thanks again!

Best,

Adam Miller

Adam Miller

We are incredibly happy with the marimba.  It is the finest quality instrument we have, and the students treat it like a shrine.

David McKnight - Assistant Band Director/Percussion, Abilene High School

Just wanted to drop you a note to tell you that we are really enjoying the new marimba.

It sounds great!   The  bass sound with those new resonators (Basso Bravo) is fantastic.

Thanks again.

Genaro Gonzalez - Texas State University

As I type this, a recent graduate who is pursuing degrees in both Music Education and Performance is practicing on the marimba one.  Our current and past students are loving the instrument!

Thank you for your attention to detail and concern for customer care!

Alex Claussen- Instrumental Music Supervisor, Bartlesville Public Schools

My 5-octave Marimba One sounds beautiful. It has an unbelievable singing quality.

Derek Kwan

The marimba arrived safely. I have to tell you that I am VERY impressed with every detail having to do with Marimba 1. The instrument is exquisite, the design is brilliant, the assembly is a snap, the packing job was done expertly, with attention to detail and loving care, and the service you provided has been the best. Marimba 1 is a class act. Please pass on my appreciation to everyone involved.

Rodman Marymor

I received my marimba yesterday and am absolutely thrilled. You know how fantastic it is, so I don't have to gush on and on, but I just wanted to thank you for the judgment, creativity, intelligence, and care that went into this instrument. And the way it was delivered -- packed into the bags -- was genius.

Anne Szabla

Thank you so much for the wonderful instrument you've created for me! It is truly a joy to practice and perform on! Absolutely lovely!

Lori Fulton

Your craftsmanship and the overall physical beauty of the instrument is overwhelming. My first and greatest surprise immediately after setting up the marimba (which I found with your instruction manual very doable even on the first try, and solo) was the ease in which the marimba was to play. I had prepared myself for a long and arduous relearning process converting from bars of uniform width, to bars of varied width. Instead what I discovered was an instrument far easier to play than the one I'd been using for the last 10 years. The switch over was immediate and without difficulty... My favorite bar on the marimba is the low E. It has perfect harmonic overtones and richness without being overwhelming... The bottom line is I guess you could say I'm another ecstatic Marimba One customer. Thanks for all your hard and caring work.

Allan Marcus

Thanks for checking in with us. We love the new marimba, and have many exciting concerts planned for it. The shipping company did a great job, and I've enjoyed showing the marimba to all interested students and faculty. The bars are just great! When you notice how the bars are from different stocks of rosewood, and yet the craftsmen from Marimba One selected an incredibly balanced and beautiful set of bars...this is why I wanted to go with the company. Never was I worried about what was to arrive.

Nick Terry - Professor of Percussion, Chapman University

The kids (and faculty) LOVE the marimba!

Doug Ashcraft - Idyllwild Arts Academy

Thank you so much for our new marimba! It is beautiful. TOTALLY AMAZING HEIGHT ADJUSTABLE FRAME. YEAH. We are so happy, short ones and tall ones alike are rejoicing. I have a lineup of graduate students outside my door waiting for me to go teach so they can have a turn on it. Great stuff. I have no complaints, it sounds wonderful, looks great. The marimba arrived in great shape and I can find no flaws.

John Flood - San Diego State University

What a great instrument! It is impressive in both the low and high registers. The customer service is second to none. The entire staff at Marimba One were extremely knowledgeable and very helpful. They walked us through the purchasing process every step of the way, and we ended up with an instrument we were very happy with.

Vincent Pitzulo, Assistant Director, Percussion Instructor Fairfield High School

Ron, Thank you so much for the amazing instrument! I love practicing and performing with it! Having such a great instrument is very special to me and I couldn't have asked to anything better. You make amazing marimbas!

Cat Wilson

Ron's new instrument represents a stunning development in marimba construction. He has found a way to minimize the overtones of the low register and focus the fundamental. The resulting: a rich, clean bass sound with an enlarged more forgiving beating spot. Fast passages have a clarity and chords, especially those with minor thirds, are free of dissonance created by the clash of the major tenth overtone. This is an extraordinary achievement!

Jack Van Geem - SF Symphony / Colburn School of Music

I received the instrument today. It looks and sounds absolutely fantastic... I greatly look forward to getting to know this wonderful instrument. The Mahogany finish is gorgeous as well… After twelve years in the coming, I couldn't be happier.

Chester Englander

Is it sacrilege to say that I never liked the marimba very much? I am sorry to say, but I didn't really. However, playing Ron's instruments convinced me that there were real possibilities that I had not encountered before. So I bought an instrument from Marimba One. The marimba and its sound are beautiful of course, but the thing that convinces me is how much I love playing it! Now I am involved in two marimba commissions and have scheduled several recitals of marimba music. I would never have believed that was possible!!!

Steve Schick - University of San Diego, California

It sounds amazing.  The Basso Bravo resonators truly provide a very resonant bass sound unlike many other models of marimbas.

Thanks!

Derrick Logozzo -- MM Perf. Director of Instrumental Music, Richland College

My friend and GMU School of Music Percussion Coordinator John Kilkenny has reminded me of our proud ownernship of two new Marimba One instruments.  Mason is most fortunate to have instruments of such excellent craftsmanship.  I look forward to becoming better acquainted with these world-class instruments this fall from the podium with our University Wind Symphony and from the audience during performances of our percussion ensemble directed by Prof. Kilkenny.  I know our students will benefit enormously from having the opportunity to play on these extraordinary instruments.

With Sincere Appreciation,

Mark Camphouse

Mark Camphouse - Professor, School of Music, George Mason University

It is truly as beautiful a work as any masterpiece which was written to be played upon it.

Eric Christopherson

Just wanted take a moment to thank you for building me a marimba. I absolutely love it! It has made it safely to Tallahassee, Florida and is being enjoyed on a daily basis. I couldn't be happier with it.

Megan Ams

The instrument is BEAUTIFUL and I have no reservations in saying that it is the nicest (M1 or otherwise) that I have ever played on. The new bass resonators (Basso Bravo) are awesome and the low octave is truly astounding. I love the instrument and am SO impressed with the work that you guys do!

Adam Groh

I wanted to take a moment to thank you for manufacturing such a wonderful instrument. Since its arrival on campus a short time ago, the marimba has been a big hit with my colleagues, administration, and of course, the students. I am positive this new addition to our growing department will please audiences alike, now and in the many years to come.

Dr. Jeff Calissi - Assistant Professor of Music, Eastern Connecticut State University

I spent an hour unpacking the boxes and putting the frame together as if each part was a newborn child. When I unrolled the bars, they looked beautiful... and then I got to the bass end and almost lost it. They are stunning! So dark and classy looking. The whole instrument truly a work of art... oh, and the sound! ... Bottom line, the keyboard is a dream come true. I can never thank you enough for truly capturing the ideal in my instrument, one that will allow me to make my music and express myself on a first-class marimba.

Jamie Deitz

I love your marimbas. They are the best instrument that I have ever had the pleasure of playing and owning. The sound, the design, the feel - they make playing easy!

Rich Dart

The instrument is great. All of my students and percussion friends are jealous!

Aaron Turner

The experience with you has been first class all the way. We absolutely love the marimba. Your work is simply incredible!!! Thanks.

Tom Horst - Boulder High School

Thanks, I really love the marimba. It looks and most importantly, sounds great.

Alex Kim

Every time I bring my marimba out to a gig, the quality of sound, manufacturing and overall aesthetic has a huge effect on everyone that comes to the show! Thanks for a great product. Thanks!
