Julie Bemis

Dr. Julie Bemis is Vice President of Education & Community Engagement at the Richmond Symphony and an internationally active percussionist, educator, and arts leader. A two-time Fulbright Scholar (Germany), she has performed, taught, and presented throughout North America and Europe, building a career that bridges performance, education, and community impact.

Bemis previously served as Assistant Professor of Percussion at the University of Northern Colorado, where she encouraged students to expand the classical tradition through connections with theater, dance, and other artistic disciplines. She has presented clinics at institutions including UCLA, Florida State University, the North Carolina School of the Arts, CU Boulder, Colorado State University, and Clemson University. Her work in networking, arts consulting, and innovation has been featured at PASIC and on programs such as @percussion and Pete’s Percussion Podcast.

As a performer, Bemis has appeared with orchestras including the Munich Symphonic Orchestra, Munich Chamber Orchestra, Charlotte Symphony Orchestra, Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony, Toronto Concert Orchestra, and Colorado Symphony. Highlights include performing Bartók’s Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion with Martha Argerich in Lübeck, Germany, premiering Marco Hertenstein’s Schlagzeug Konzert in Ontario, performing Milhaud’s Concerto pour Percussion et Petit Orchestre with the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra, and appearing on Broadway in New York with Cirque Dreams. She also created and performed the theatrical percussion work Alice On Time.

Her research explores interdisciplinary performance and percussion theater; her dissertation, Theater Percussion: Developing a Twenty-First-Century Genre Through the Connection of Visual, Dramatic, and Percussive Arts, is available online, and her writing has appeared in Percussive Notes.
